The connect is: Marco Polo.

Marco polo returned from Kublai Khan's court and popularised present day china as cathai in the west, as it was called by mongols and some central asian regions then. And for many centuries owing to Marco polo china in the west was called cathay.

When two american airforce pilots founded hong kong based carrier Cathay pacific, they named it so inspired by Marco polo's Cathay and not stopping there also named Cathay Pacific's loyalty scheme/club as 'Marco polo'.

The airport, is Marco Polo airport serving venice, where Marco polo lived and died .
